A three-piece instrumental band formed in Tokyo in 1999. The members are Masako Takada (guitar), Yuri Zaikawa (bass), and Sayaka Himeno (drums). The band's name comes from the computer "Year 2000 problem" (nisennen mondai). With basically no vocals, they play rough, danceable music built on a strong, solid framework. While continuing to work on their own label, they have won recognition in Europe and the United States.

Formation and activity in Japan

The three met in a university music club and formed the band in 1999. Playing live in Tokyo and continuing to release self-produced records, they put out Sorede Souzou Suru Neji (2004) and Tori (2005). In 2006 they started their own label, Bijin Records, and released the album Rokuon in April of that year.

Activity abroad

In 2008, the Norwegian label Smalltown Supersound reissued two of their early EPs, which brought them attention outside Japan. They toured Europe from May 2011, and on a second European tour that autumn and winter, played with Battles at the Forum in London on November 21.

With Adrian Sherwood, the renowned dub producer who runs On-U Sound, they made the album #N/A, released on On-U Sound. The title is short for "Nisennenmondai with Adrian."
